Puppymill broker to the stars...

So if you were Paris Hilton, and you needed a teacup shmoodle or chi where do you go? Answer: you go here. Pets of Bel Air. An up scale pet shop selling 'up scale' (is that possible?) puppy mill puppies.
Thier clients also include Denise Richards, Demi Moore, Britney Spears and Robin Williams. (Dang I loved Robin Williams) These people have more than enough money to buy a good dog, they have no need to support puppy mills. Now of course Pets of Bel Air deny selling puppies from puppy mills.

"We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to have the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we’ve held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

Each of our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from a USDA approved pet breeder. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected, and when we see the conditions that these animals are living in it feels as though the USDA has failed our business, and most importantly they have failed the animals that do not have a voice."

I am NOT a fan of the HSUS, they are only slightly less offensive than PETA. (the HSUS raises millions of dollars by posing has a humane society-but don't fund ANY humane societies) but in this case they actually did some good.

The USDA (which is NOT the US Dressage Association, for you FHOTD readers) it is a body that polices puppy mills. This USDA is the US Department of Agriculture. Those of you who have livestock experience will know how minimal the standards are for livestock. These are the people this site is bragging approved their pups. NEWS FLASH!!!!!!! If the USDA is inspecting the kennels, thats cause its a puppy mill. No reputable breeder breeding good dogs will ever be inspected by the USDA as they don't fall under their jurisdiction.

So what other bad practices does this upscale puppy peddling business have. First of all I love their logo (can you year the scarcasm?) It shows the all important image the store wants you to buy into. Since they are purchasing superiour puppy mill pups, they should be able to offer a decent health guarantee.

"All of our pets come with 2 warranties.

1-Year Health Warranty: Your pet is warranted against certain congenital or hereditary problems.

Limited 14-Day Viral Warranty: Your pet is warranted against certain viral infections (i.e. Parvo virus, Corona, Distemper, Hepatitis)."

Wow a whole YEAR against unspecified health issues? And a limited Viral warranty. Just shoot me now please.

I looked at the pups. They show a JRT pup. OMG are they going to sell that pup to some unsuspecting person expecting Eddie? 99.99999% of JRTs in the rescue come from people who bought from a byb or petstore and had no idea what they were getting into. Of course they are never really told, as that may scare off a sale. This is an out of standard JRT (notice the short legs) who looks like the countless that are dropped off (often still as pups) to shelters and rescues across the continent. This pup did not come from a JRTCA breeder. I bet this pup is very expencive too. As a side note you can get a great JRT pup from a top breeder with a life time health and temperament guarantee for between 750-1200 dollars. This also includes full breeder support for life too.

If they don't have what you want, you can special order your dog. "To special order a puppy or kitten all we need is a deposit of at least $300.00 (depending on the breed) and your desired specifics (i.e. "female, tea-cup, applehead, black & white, Chihuahua" or "large, male, Bernese Mountain Dog")"

So why are stars so stupid?

Wow! There is absolutely no information on their site. They sell puppies, yet there is no information about how to feed, train, or routine vet care for them. No information on individual breeds that they sell either.

Looks like they really care about what happens with their pups (not).

Maybe people who sell online just don't provide that kind of information? I don't shop for dogs online.

Not sure how valuable an appointment with their vet is either, especially if it delays a trip to an unbiased vet following purchase.

THANK YOU for shitting on the HSUS. What a joke.

I have always wondered why people with tonnes of cash buy the ugliest, muttiest trainwreck puppies and spend thousands to keep the poor thing alive like it's normal for a dog to cost a bajillion dollars in medication and surgery.

This store has their heads up their asses - a pet store that can get you dogs in the right size, color, sex and coat type at a moment's notice scares the crap out of me.

OH there will be an HSUS bashing post in the future.... Horrible asshats that they are.

on the pets of bel air front page - they admit that they don't have a license, at the moment, to sell animals. Yet, there are still many many animals listed for sale...

Love your blog, agree with pretty much all of it, except, haha, i have to note that there is not a Dressage organization that uses USDA. You're thinking of the USDF (Federation)!

Right..! Oh well. LOL I am not American (that is my excuse and I am sticking to it)

Either way its not a 'good' thing to have the USDA looking at your kennels, (I bet the USDF could do a better job.)

As a member of the cat fancy I see a bigger problem with this store. They are selling Bengal kittens. Bengals are NOT for everyone. They can be WILD animals. Also it doesn't mention that they can be F1s which means that is has a wild parent. My best friend rescued a bengal from a lady who put him in a dog crate because it was too "wild". My best friend has had cats all her life, but this cat is VERY different. It is probably in part due to its rough start, but the wild tendencies really come out. Someone could be seriously injured. Urgh.... maybe I need to start my own cat blog because this has got me steamed.

I think many, many (25+) years ago it was the United States Dressage Association?

Not just the stars. It stuns me every time someone I would have thought was a smart person, like a physician, or a lawyer, or a financial planner... goes to the local mall and buys some cute little designer breed puppy for $1200.

You'd think the message had got out there. Apparently, it hasn't. It really hasn't.

I don't understand what possesses anyone with intelligence to just go out and buy a living animal without much thought. Is it complete lack of impulse control? All puppies/kittens/baby animals are cute. One feels desperately sorry for them behind bars too, especially when one knows they likely came from a crappy puppy mill environment.
I KNOW all about puppy mills and all about how to add a good puppy to the family but sometimes I have to be restrained from buying one anyway. I told myself never ever to enter a pet store which sells live animals so I wouldn't be faced with such temptation. It's easy to do- puppies are CUTE. It's HARD to exercise restraint. That's why I've always told people interested in getting a new pet NEVER to enter a pet shop because they will get suckered in by adorable faces. It's the only way to prevent it. ;) Puppies are too cute.
A few years back I went to an expensive California doggie boutique looking for doggie fashions to laugh at, basically. This place also sold puppies, nothing under a thousand dollars, every damned dog a designer mutt. I was appalled. I started laughing out loud and telling the patrons considering buying the high priced puppy mill mutts that they were crazy and for that kind of money they could buy a quality dog. If they just wanted a fancy-shmancy mutt they could pick a puppy up at the pound and make up any cutesy breed name and pedigree they wanted for it because there is no consistent breeding in Poo-Zu's and Puggles and Chiweenies.oh man,
how stupid can be people GET?
I mean, I understand one can lose one's brain over CUTE PUPPIES wheeee! But honestly, a THOUSAND DOLLARS for a puppy mill/byb MONGREL?! NUTS.

Having worked in a petstore way too long- money was tight when I started, then I felt bad about abandoning the animals- I could tell you horror stories.

Dogs left in the back to die from Parvo, puppies dropped on their heads and which later die from the trama (and not taken to a vet- owner says "they're fine, they're fine").

And anyone can buy them. No one tells them that the dog they want won't fit in their household. But the buyer can bring it back for a 25% refund!

I quit over the owner telling me to treat all the dogs for parvo (it was going through the kennel) with a karo syrup/bleach mixture!

Petstores are horrible!!! And any good breeder would never allow their puppies to be put in a window!
