So who watched Oprah?

Hey Readers,
Did you watch it? I didn't and forgot to get it taped? How was it, and does anyone want to do a guest blog on it?

Hey Kerri!

I'd love to do a quest blog on it! but I would be kinda nervous :P
Anywho, I saw it...I was pleasantly surprised. They raised good points and it was definitely a tear jerker.

I saw most of it. I was sickened by the euthanasia segment. I am a foster for a rescue group and one of my favorites was a pointer that looked a lot like the dog they put to sleep that day. I cried when I watched them muzzle that dog and put the needle in his leg. I wonder if you can find the whole thing online somewhere?

I found it, http://www2.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/200804/tows_past_20080404.jhtml I dont know how to make it into a link you can just click on. You can't see the whole thing there but you CAN see a lot of things they didn't even have on the show.

I saw it. I had to try to explain to my son why they killed the doggies. I told him that some people don't take care of their dogs (he's only a preschooler.) I told him that's why it's so important we take care of Karma, our BC/Aussie rescue. We then talked about taking care of our animals. Some people only need sea monkeys.

It was beyond a tear-jerker!

I do puppy mill rescue and have been amazed by these dogs! The ones that get out, the older females are the majority of them, are true survivors.

I currently have 1 maltese, 1 bichon, 1 mini poodle, 3 pekingese, 1 poodle mix and 1 schipperke all from different mills. All retired breeders. It takes time and patience but they do come around! They may never be lap dogs, but no less devoted to you than the 8 week old pup you raised!

I'm not a big fan of Oprah and rarely watch the show, but I have to give her respect for this one. And a huge thumbs up to Main Line for putting out the money to get that billboard where she'd see it!

I missed the show, but I have to wonder about Oprah.

I mean a few years ago, when she wanted a new dog, she just went to some breeders house and walked out that day with three puppies.

I just don't know of any responsible breeder who will do that. All of their puppies are planned for, and have homes and owners before they are even born.

So.....wtf was up with that? Who just has a litter of older puppies sitting around waiting for Oprah to show up and take three? A pretty irresponsible breeder, that is for sure!! (Don't think she had a puppy mill, but definatly a back yard breeder, not someone who is doing the best for the breed)

I watched it and it was very well done. I do hope it makes a difference and educates those that didn't realize the horrors of pet stores and the pet trade in North America!

Yeah, she went to a puppy mill before and got white goldens or whatever. They had like 50+ dogs in this place in the desert. No one responsible does that. Period.

I hope some people who saw the show "get" it, but I don't think Oprah really learned anything in the process. I don't really like Oprah, though. To much shameless self promotion.

jstpam, she acknowledged near the end of the show that she only bought from breeders because she thought that was the best way to get a certain breed, but she says any dogs in the future will only be from shelters.

Yes, she did buy puppies the wrong way, but she had the balls to come on national television and admit what she did was wrong, and that she didn't know, and also the good heart to try to educate the many millions of people who aren't aware of even what a puppy mill is. I think she did a very good thing, and MANY people watch her show. Thank you Oprah!

Buhbing.....

I am not saying that it is wrong to buy from breeders, just not from bad breeders.

Serious breeders, breed their best to the best, striving to always improve the breed. Every breeding is planned in advance, and every future owner questioned and approved before the breeding takes place When the puppies are placed, there is a contract covering health issues, and requiring the breeder be contacted if the dog should ever need to be rehomed for any reason.

When I got my Basenji, I was extensivly questioned and on a waiting list for 11 months. They would not breed until they had enough interest to guarentee homes for all the puppies. I had to give references, and put down a deposit, as well as return a copy of the veterinarian report after I brought him home and had him examined.

They do not advertise "puppies for sale" in newspapers or on craigslist. Their puppies are planned for and they do not happen to have "three puppies" sitting around for someone to just pick up on a whim.

I just remember watching the Oprah get three Golden puppies episode, and cringing when the showed up for one dog, and ended up taking home three, I just thought the breeder wasn't on the up and up. Again not quiet a puppy mill, but not a truly serious breeder.

colorisnteverything....thanks for comment. I was beginning to think I was the only person to see the three puppies episode, and thinking that "something" was NOT right!

I thought it was an awesome way to open up the awareness to a lot of people who may ohterwise not have known what goes on.

I think the show was well done, even though I am not an oprah fan.

Makes me want to go get another dog, I even researched the rescue, but 4 is enough for now.

Great Blog by the way!

I watched and it made me ill! I knew about puppy mills, but that show really brought the issue home for me! How can the state of PA let the Amish get away with all of the horrible things they do to animals (including New Holland Sale Barn) Using their religon as an excuse to abuse, makes me very angry!!

My thoughts exactly, Laney!

Don't care much for Oprah.
How well did she educate herself before buying her own dogs? She has all the resources available and didn't know what a puppy mill was? Give me a break, that's bullshit. The only reason she has a change of heart is, because she was called on it by the public and that would be bad publicity.

Here a link to a puppy mill parading itself as a rescue:
http://www.gentlegiantsrescue.com/

It's amazing, how many rare breeds they just happen to have in rescue and how many of them just happen to have puppies.
It sickens me to think, people pay the exorberant amount of money for those dogs and that even petfinder is given them a platform.
This site has some of the horror stories of people who have adopted from that scam rescue.

I checked them out when I was helping a friend look for a dog. Guess what breed she was looking for? A Kuvasz. It was the first time I had heard of the breed and I typically wasnt impressed my the breeders I found online so she still hasn't gotten a puppy and won't untill we find the right dog at the right place.
